On Monday, a Twitter user, Oluyemi Fasipe, accused policemen of Ekan Meje Division, Kwara State, of collecting ransom from a man he identified as Oluwole Ayodeji.

Fasipe said Ayodeji was kidnapped by policemen of Ekan Meje Division and then asked to pay a ransom of N40,000 in order to regain his freedom. The sum requested by the police officers was reportedly transferred from Ayodeji’s GT Bank account to Olaosebikan Wole.

FIJ contacted Okasanmi Ajayi, Police Public Relations Officer, Kwara State, but he said he had not received any such complaints. He advised Ayodeji to come to the police station to make a formal complaint.

Ajayi said the police could not act on informations gotten alone from Social media. He said if a complaints are formally made, the police can identify and investigate them.

“I don’t have such complaints. If there is a complaint, the person that is affected should come to the police station,” he said.

“Mentioning something on social media, mentioning Ekan Meje division is not enough for us to say anything serious because we don’t  have the complaints. We cannot just pick all the police unit in Ekan Meje because a social media user said somebody kidnapped somebody.

“So, if you have any genuine report to make, come. We will investigate whoeverkidnapped the victim or collected money from him; we’ll identify the person and the person will be investigated and if found guilty we will deal with the person in accordance with the law.”
