Tobi Akinwale, an entrepreneur, has expressed disappointment over Jumia’s refusal to refund his N61,490 after cancelling an order.
Akinwale told FIJ that on April 17, he ordered Soundcore wireless earphones from Jumia and later cancelled the order. But since then, Jumia has not refunded him.
“On April 17, I ordered a Soundcore Liberty Air 2 Pro wireless earphones on Jumia, but I cancelled the order because I didn’t like the colour and I’d found an alternative,” Akinwale said.
“I got an automated message informing me that I’d get a refund in 24 hours. Three days later, I sent Jumia a Twitter DM, telling them I had not been attended to. They apologised and said they had a system downtime.”

Akinwale further stated that on April 23, the money was credited to his JumiaPay account but he was not allowed to withdraw it.
“The money was credited to my JumiaPay account. I had to download the JumiaPay app just to withdraw. I tried to withdraw, but I was told it would take three business days,” he said.
Akinwale also said after the failed withdrawal, the money no longer reflected on his JumiaPay app and his bank was also not credited.
“I checked again, but the status read ‘completed’ on the JumiaPay app. I was surprised because I didn’t receive the alert. I checked my Wema Bank account as well as my bank statement covering that period, but there was no credit of that amount from Jumia. Now, the money is not on JumiaPay anymore. The status is written as though I have been paid,” he said.

“I sent them another message. I expected that they would give me evidence of the credit. Instead, they apologised and said they knew they had elapsed the time they gave for the refund.
“Every day my money stays with Jumia, it loses its real value. I need this money. It’s been over 30 days. Jumia said they were working on it.”
At press time, FIJ’s email to Jumia had not been responded to.
