Hope Jubril (not real name), a Lagos State-based online vendor, has narrated how Jumia sold her a non-functional phone after she paid N89,000.

Jubril told FIJ that she bought the phone from the online shopping platform on March 16.

“I bought a from Jumia on March 16 and it was delivered to me the following day,” Jubril said.

“After receiving the phone, I decided to charge it. As soon as I started charging it, the phone became unnecessarily hot, forcing me to quickly remove it from its charger.

“I received another shocker on the spot when I checked the battery and discovered that its strength had suddenly risen to 74 percent. This was a battery that was extremely low when I received it. And I had not even charged it for up to five minutes.

“When this happened, I immediately repackaged the phone and called Jumia to lodge a complaint.”

Jubril said Jumia would later send one of its dispatch riders to come collect the phone from her.

“After they had collected the phone, and when I did not hear from them, I called them again to know the way forward. This was when the representative I spoke with then told me that my complaint was not valid and that I had already used the phone,” Jubril said.

“Everyone knows that it is standard practice that one would have to charge a newly bought phone first before making use of it. Has Jumia now become an outfit that deals in the sale of substandard products?

“Things like this should only happen when one buys a cheap and scrappy second-hand product with a ‘no-testing’ condition from a roadside hustler.

“They have since returned the phone to me and I have not been able to get a new one from them. Jumia has chosen to sell me a fake phone and I want my money back. This is a clear case of scam and it is not good for Jumia’s image.

“Another delivery guy I spoke with recently said Jumia is now in the habit of delivering fake products to its customers without taking them back or making a refund. It means they can no longer be trusted. I just want my money back.”

At press time, Jumia had not responded to FIJ’s inquiry sent on Thursday.
