King Charles III, the monarch and Head of State of the United Kingdom, has sent a condolence letter to Muhammadu Buhari over the floods that have killed over 600 Nigerians.

Charles III said that he was “deeply saddened” in the letter signed on Friday.

“I wanted you to know how deeply saddened both my wife and I are to hear of the many people who have lost their loved ones and whose lives have been so dreadfully affected as a consequence of the devastating floods across Nigeria,” Charles III’s letter read in part.

“We remember with the greatest affection our visits to Nigeria and the kindness of the people we met.

“However inadequate this may be under such tragic circumstances, our most heartfelt sympathy is with all those who have suffered so much, and our thoughts are with those working to support the recovery efforts.

“I know that the United Kingdom stands in solidarity with Nigeria as you recover from these truly terrible events.”

Charles III’s letter is the first public exchange of sympathy between a world leader and Nigeria over the disastrous floods. The British monarch is well known for his interest in the environment and climate change.

The federal ministry of humanitarian affairs has said that states such as Rivers should expect the floods till the end of November.

Nigeria’s ongoing flood crisis has affected 33 states, claimed 603 lives and displaced 1,302,589 persons.
