An unnamed Nigerian asylum seeker in the UK has made an attempt on his own life after hearing of the country’s plan to transfer him to the Bibby Stockholm barge.
The Bibby Stockholm barge is a long flat-bottom engineless boat used in accommodating asylum seekers by the UK Home Office.
According to The Guardian, the 23-year-old Nigerian had returned to his hotel located in Essex on Tuesday evening, only to find out at the reception that he was due to be moved to the barge by the UK government.

After he was notified of the imminent transfer, the man reportedly left the hotel lobby and then attempted to hang himself at the car park.
He was found alive but in a bad state by a fellow asylum seeker. He was then taken via an air ambulance to Colchester General Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

Asylum seekers have complained about the existence of Legionella bacteria, microscopic living organisms capable of inflicting serious pneumonia on victims.
It was also reported that the Nigerian man arrived in the UK as an unaccompanied asylum-seeking child and lived in foster care until he turned 18.
