Ogechukwu Okonkwo, a Lagos-based businessman, has narrated how OKay Naira, an online money lending platform, defamed him after he could not meet up with the payment deadline given to him.

In an interview with FIJ, Okonkwo said that apart from soiling his image, OKay Naira defamed his wife by sending similar defamatory messages to her phone contacts.

The businessman also added that he had asked for a deadline extension from the platform because he knew he would not be able to repay his loan on time, but it had been denied.

He said he took an N8,000 loan from the company on October 21 with a plan to repay within seven days.

On October 29, Okonkwo said, a male agent of the loan shark called him, asking why he had not paid, but he assured the agent he would pay within a short time.

The agent would not be patient with him but would call his wife to verify if they were indeed a couple, he said.

Okay Message Alert

Okonkwo’s wife pleaded with the agent and promised him her husband would pay up after admitting they were married, but the agent did not listen. Instead, he took steps to defame him.

“Before I knew it, the agent had saved my wife’s WhatsApp display picture, which contained my wife, myself, and our baby. He wrote a message on the picture that called us criminals and told the public not to do business with us. My BVN is now public,” Okonkwo told FIJ.

“I have a business running. I only needed urgent cash that day, but OKay Naira has messed me up. I had used them in the past seven times, so I don’t know why they chose this method of money retrieval.

“My sister and a former neighbour in Kano sent the defamatory image to me. The agent is boldly saying I have yet to see anything. Now, I won’t pay until he’s fished out.”

When FIJ called OKay Naira via the number the male agent used to communicate with Okonkwo, a female call agent answered and hurled insults at this reporter.
