A Russian court on Thursday extended the detention of Brittney Griner, a United States basketball star, for another two months, following drug charges.

According to BBC, the Moscow court announced that it was keeping Griner in custody, and that her detention had been extended to May.

“The court granted the request of the investigation and extended the period of detention of the US citizen Griner until May 19,” the court was quoted to have said.

Meanwhile, the US Department of State has stated that it is doing everything possible to help her.

“Diplomats closely engaged on this case and in frequent contact with Brittney Griner’s legal team,” a spokesperson for the state department told the BBC.

“We insist the Russian government provide consular access to all US citizen detainees in Russia, including those in pre-trial detention, as Brittney Griner is.”

The official said that Russia had continuously denied access to Americans held in Russian jails.

“Russia must abide by its legal obligations and allow us to provide consular services for US citizens detained in Russia,” the official added.

Griner, a double Olympic gold medallist, has been held in Moscow since February when customs officials allegedly found cannabis oil in her luggage, an offence which carries a maximum 10-year jail sentence.

The 31-year-old had travelled to play during the US league’s off-season in Russia.
