Abraham Amusan, a student, has accused Tajudeen Adegboyega, a police inspector attached to the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti, Lagos, of extorting him.

Amusan was arrested on allegations of phone theft, but Adegboyega later apprehended the culprit. To regain freedom however, Amusan was made to part with N45,000.

On March 22, one Mercy Vincent, Amusan’s friend, asked him to help charge her phone. He took the device home to return it when she called him with another device.

“After getting home, I was very tired. I charged the phone and went to sleep in another room,” Amusan told FIJ. “While sleeping, a roommate entered my room without my knowledge, took the phone and sold it.”

He said he woke up and did not see the phone where he kept it. When he told Vincent the phone was missing, she accused him of foul play, and demanded he replace it.

“Later that night, her boyfriend, who is a cultist, stationed people outside my area to get hold of me and beat me, which they did eventually,” Amusan said. “I was later handed to the police. I was in their custody overnight.

“The following morning, Arogbola Oladimeji, my roommate, came to the apartment and was caught and brought down to the station where he confessed.

“My dad was asked to pay a bill of N30,000 and N15,000 petition fee before I was released.”

Amusan told FIJ he was evicted from the apartment after the incident.

When FIJ contacted Adegboyega, he denied extorting Amusan, and said Oladimeji had made part payment for the stolen phone.

“I don’t know anything about that. I was not in the office that day, I will find out,” Adegboyega told FIJ. He, however, added that Oladimeji’s family had paid over N100,000, with the promise of paying up the balance later.

When FIJ contacted Adegboyega again, he claimed he did not know anything about the case or about Oladimeji’s payment.
