Mary Olasupo, a Lagos-based nurse, set out on June 5, 2023, to send a fingerprint card to a recruitment agency in Florida, USA. Her courier of choice was United Parcel Service (UPS).

Back in February, Mary was in search of a job in the USA, and she applied through Medpro International, and the agency sent her the card to append her fingerprint on and send back to them.

Through UPS, she shipped this card into Nigeria. It arrived on June 2, 2023.

She took the card to the police Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) where she completed the process, and then proceeded to UPS on June 5 to transport it back to the USA.

For a fee of ₦24,088, UPS sent her package to Medpro International. That should have concluded the process, but Mary said the agency wrote back to her saying UPS delivered a wet package and she would have to restart the whole process.

“The person who was supposed to receive the card in the USA told me that it was dripping wet,” Mary narrated to FIJ. “That meant I had to start the process all over again, which I did.

“I got another fingerprint card and shipped it into Nigeria through DHL this time. When I finished, I approached UPS to compensate me for the damaged parcel or deliver the new one for free without damaging it, but they refused.

“I showed them the message from the agency in the USA, but they kept telling me to ask them to report it. I explained to them that the agency receives many applications a day and would only be able to liaise with me, and not the courier, but UPS insisted they wouldn’t do anything.”

On July 7, FIJ wrote to UPS seeking to hear their side of things, but we got an automated response. Minutes later, they mailed Mary asking that she appear in their head office with the document she wished to resend.

Mary went to their office but after discussing with them, the company maintained their stance on not sending the document for her unless she paid the full courier charge.

As of press time, UPS was yet to send any further responses to FIJ’s email on the matter.
